The most influential EDM artists of all time have taken on a mission to save music and fix what many consider a stale music scene right now- Specifically addressing the current EDM craze that can make anyone, often regardless of talent, a superstar overnight just by playing with some computer programs yet never touching a musical instrument or even a microphone, and has created an army of clone producers infecting speakers across the world with similar soul-less sounds- a far departure from what was felt when Daft Punk exploded onto the scene in the 90&#8217;s.</p> <p class="p1">Random Access Memories is EDM losing the Electronic but finding something it so desperately needed, a soul. The Daft Punk everyone expected (and wanted) is clearly dead. RAM is a transition for Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter from robots who brought the mainstream world the best electronic music ever produced to now finding their way back to humanity and reminding people what real music, instruments, and soul feel like.</p> <p class="p1"><!-- more --></p> <p class="p1">The first comment I made after hearing the album was a twitter post saying it sounded like elevator music for hipsters, which it does. It is not a record you are going to hear taking over past Daft Punk EDM hits that are still in current club rotation worldwide, and its mid tempo 1970&#8217;s disco feel is a far departure from anything else out right now. It is not a record most EDM fans are going to like, let alone love, at first listen. It is not a record that anyone expected, and takes time to digest. It is a record that many will say they love just to be cool, but would never give the time of day if it was from any group not named Daft Punk.</p> <p class="p1">Quite simply, RAM is a mind fuck the second you hit play. The opening track, &#8220;Give Life Back To Music,&#8221; as if the title doesn&#8217;t give it away, is the start of this journey for DP from robot to human. The album itself then hits a very melancholic state as you feel the sadness of the robots missing the elements of being human. Love, touch, and other inherent human qualities are the prime subjects of the project and you can taste the sadness from the robotic voices of the robots longing for these feelings.</p> <p class="p2"><span>Even further left than anyone could have expected after hearing &#8220;Get Lucky,&#8221; the album features everything from 9 minute plus jam sessions complete with electronic drum programs to full live orchestras all mixed with some of the best live playing you&#8217;ll ever hear thanks to Nile Rogers and a group of some of the best musicians in the world rounded together alongside some interesting choices for vocalists and minimal superstar guest appearances. You even are subject to the history of Girogio Moroder and disco, which almost feels like it was placed in the album to teach listeners the history of dance music more so than creating a dance record. The album even ends in line with the mixture of live instruments alongside electronic space crashing sound effects and synthesizers in the epic &#8220;Crash,&#8221; before coming down to earth and concluding the masterful body of work. </span></p> <p class="p1">As for the setup of the project, it has been second to none. From rumors of a performance at SXSW this year (where people were waited outside the Texas capital building for days amongst rumors of a live performance on the lawn that turned out to be false), to a surprise screening at Coachella, the master media controlling from the duo of imaging, interviews, and the so forth has worked. RAM will likely be Daft&#8217;s biggest selling first week ever thanks to the legend that has grown over time while they have been away. </p> <p class="p1">Is it perfect? No. There are points when you feel like things could be a bit over thought, some moments of smooth jazz-ish lag, and a portion where your not sure if you supposed to be entertained or in school preparing for a test, but somehow it all works together in RAM as a body of work. It isn&#8217;t the most exciting album ever and lacks the energy expected from a Daft Punk project, and you really do need to be in the right headspace to listen to the project (while also taking it in full, not just skimming through a full individual tracks).</p> <p class="p1">So what is the verdict, is it a game changing masterpiece or disco revival gone bad? The reviews for the project are all over the place. Some have given it a perfect score citing it as the crown jewel on the French duo&#8217;s catalog while others have trashed it as awful and out of the comfort zone of what the robots do best. In my opinion, it is both. Yes, both. </p> <p class="p1">Luckily, the beauty of music, like any art is that there is no right or wrong. Bad or good is subjective to ones personal taste and opinion, and even how you feel at the moment. When I first half heartily listened to the project in the background skimming through it track by track and while expecting to hear the evolution of Homework, without taking it all in, i was disappointed. After going back to it without any distractions from the outside world and listening (and focusing) straight through, I fell in love with the project. </p> <p class="p1">Have the robots saved music? I still can&#8217;t say, and we may not know for another decade or more. Even when Daft Punk originally came out, they weren&#8217;t credited with really pioneering modern  EDM until it&#8217;s recent explosion and only after every EDM artist and DJ cited them as the number one influence on them from Skrillex to the late DJ AM.</p> <p class="p1">Looking through reaction on social media, people either despise or think its a masterpiece. Others don&#8217;t know what to say. There is probably more blog posts and reviews after a day about the project than of any other album in history. Some won&#8217;t ever get it, some will swear it is the best constructed album of our generation. I go back and forth with my feelings towards it, but ultimately can&#8217;t tune away, let alone wrap my head around it, almost driving me a little crazy. I don&#8217;t remember the last time a project has garnered such an emotional reaction on both sides, opened the conversation on what is right and wrong in music, or felt so different and unexpected than everything else both from the group and in the market. </p> <p class="p1">Anything that drives this much feeling, emotion, and thought provocation is doing something right, and I don&#8217;t remember the last time I cared this much about a musical project.
